Ugliest Movie Costume

Now that I have a laptop I like to snuggle into bed with a good movie just before I go to sleep. Last night it was The Wild Party (1929), Clara Bow's first talkie. The actual movie aside, the fashions in it were superb examples of the late 1920s!


The pleated skirt with the long sweater, very 20s "college" look.


Plenty of 20s lingerie.


The "scandalous" showgirl outfits which got our heroines in a pickle!

As much as I adore this movie there is one outfit that Clara Bow wears that I just can't believe she ever wore. Everything about it is unflattering -- the sleeveless top, the tie and suspenders, the skirt which is tight around the hips and waits, but bulky and pleaty down below. Oh Clara! Were they purposely trying to make you look bad? Here is the offending outfit:

Maybe if it had sleeves it would look better -- it would look "harsher" and more like a uniform. But as it stands, I don't think I've seen an uglier outfit on the movie screen.
